External Thrombosed Hemorrhoid

External Thrombosed Hemorrhoid

What is an external thrombosed hemorrhoid and what is thrombosed external hemorrhoid surgery? External hemorrhoids are those found on the outside of the anus. A thrombosed hemorrhoid occurs when a hemorrhoid becomes strangulated, meaning that its blood supply is cut off. A blood clot can then form in the hemorrhoid. Thrombosed hemorrhoids are usually quite painful.

When one has a thrombosed external hemorrhoid surgery is usually required. The hemorrhoid may respond to treatments such as cortisone creams, but such treatments can take several weeks to work and an external thrombosed hemorrhoid is usually too painful to wait that long.

Before we talk about thrombosed external hemorrhoid surgery, let’s look at ways to prevent the need for surgical treatment.

Preventing constipation and hard stools, which require straining with bowel movements, best prevents hemorrhoids. Eat a diet high in fiber, found in foods like whole grain breads, beans, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Also drink plenty of fluids.

If you have trouble getting enough fiber in your diet, you can use a fiber supplement such as Citrucel or Metamucil. These are available over-the-counter at any pharmacy. If you have hard stools, you can use a stool softener such as Senokot or Colace. These are also available over-the-counter.

An external thrombosed hemorrhoid generally develops over time. Treating hemorrhoids early can help prevent the development of more serious conditions such as an external thrombosed hemorrhoid.

External hemorrhoids can be treated with over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams such as Preparation H. These medications help to shrink hemorrhoids and also relieve the itching, burning sensations, and pain associated with hemorrhoids. Using these treatments as soon as you notice symptoms of hemorrhoids can help prevent the development of an external thrombosed hemorrhoid.

If the methods mentioned in the prevention section above don’t work, then surgery may be required.

Thrombosed external hemorrhoid surgery usually involves surgically cutting away the hemorrhoid tissue. Sometimes only a small cut needs to be made to relieve the blood clot. This will usually be done under local anesthesia (you will be awake). Sometimes stitches will be needed; sometimes they will not. Recovery may be painful, and there is a risk of infection. It is safer to avoid surgery, but because an external thrombosed hemorrhoid is so painful, that is just not always possible.

Laser surgery may be an option, which is a safer alternative. It is a less invasive procedure, is less painful, and carries less risk of infection.

It should be noted that an external thrombosed hemorrhoid will often respond to non-surgical treatment if given the time to do so. Surgical treatment is just the treatment of choice for most people because the condition is so painful. However, some people prefer to use natural products when possible to treat their hemorrhoids. Natural products offer many advantages for hemorrhoid treatment, and may have other health benefits as well.

See your doctor if you hemorrhoids are very painful or if they don’t respond to do-it-yourself treatments. See your doctor right away if you notice bleeding when you move your bowels; it may be a sign of hemorrhoids but it may be a sign of some other serious medical condition as well.
